Good afternoon everyone,

The gardeners have sent the following email for information.

The leaf fall this summer has been excessive because of the drought. The trees have been shedding leaves to cope with the excessive dryness, which we will endeavour to keep on top of during our scheduled visits.

We gardeners are fighting against (what I would call) a natural disaster. It is absolutely impossible to hold up the effect of long harsh periods of weather and heatwaves. All parks and gardens, community gardens, communal gardens and royal parks are dealing with grass which has gone into a deciduous phase. This means the energy is stored in roots and shuts down the transpiration process. The grass blades are dried but roots are active. If the grass is watered irregularly during the drought it can lead to a complete deterioration of the roots.

On this point is a reason why I took the decision not to water the grass. I also viewed it as a waste of water pre-empting any hosepipe or sprinkler bans which may come into force.

To maintain the verdant colour, it would have required regular watering on a daily basis prior to the high temperatures. This would need to be consistently even though it would have been hard to maintain. Although the grass has changed to an unsightly colour, it will recover once the high temperatures have subsided and the moisture reinstated. Once we are through this period and suitable conditions return, say by September the plan is to carry out a grass programme of scarifying, fertilising and over seeding to facilitate the restoration.

As you are aware there are now hosepipe restriction in several areas in the UK and if the current conditions and lack of rain continues it is likely the other areas and London will also be restricted. With this in mind it would be appreciate if the gardens guidance is followed with regards to the grass.

Kind regards,

Lynette
